Caribbean Village Cafe

Address: 2646 Quadra Street
Phone: (250) 381-3363 ‎
Price: ~$5 for two patties and a drink
Notes: Take-away or sit-in, free wireless internet to boot!

This place doesn't look like much from the outside - or the inside really. The focus is all on the food and the flavours! Whether you just want a quick snack of Jamaican patties, or fritters (was totally addicted to these at one time, they are delicious) or a Caribbean-style curry this is your best value in town Hands Down.

Service:
The owner is a really funny guy - I quite like him. He's wicked smart - razor sharp. I once heard him recite poetry off the top of his head he had memorized in high school while waxing philosophical with regulars in his other shop (the Knotty Bean coffe shop just down the road).  These days there are often other staff there, but I love it when he is because if you sit in he will chat with you and the conversation is always interesting.

I'm a little behind adding this review - totally forgot I hadn't done it! I do love this place, so I don't want to forget about it.

As you can see from my picture, the pastry is super light and flaky. I got two different kinds today although for the life of me I can't remember what the second one was, and I apologize for not taking better notes - this was a "oh my goodness, I'm late to meet someone but if I don't eat now I'm never going to get something for hours!" kind of a meal.

I know one was curry beef, which was as always delicious - ground beef cooked up with flavourful spices. I think the other was spicy... potato? Something like that. I do remember that it was well and truly spicy - fresh chili flakes ahoy! In a very good way, but it wouldn't be for everyone - I have an extraordinarily high spice tolerance.
