Tre Fantastico

Address: 810 Humboldt
Phone: (250) 385-2326
Price: $5-10
Notes: Take caffé fantastico, add liquor and food - it is entirely possible we have reached perfection.

As I have mentioned before, Fantastico is my favourite coffee shop. My coworker has been raving about the new location and their menu for the few weeks that they've been open, and for our birthday she gave us gift certificates with the explicit note that the needed to be used at the new location.

They are open until 10 Friday (and possibly Saturday?) nights, so we thought we would check it out. The menu is small, but I imagine it will be changing fairly regularly. Their specials are a great deal, and reportedly specialty coffees are on the list of 'to do.'

See below! Except that the patio was packed :)

Given that they're a new place and we were the only customers eating dinner, it isn't really surprising that they were quite attentive, but I hope they keep it up. We ordered at the bar, but our drinks were taken outside to the patio for us, and the server made sure to tuck them under the over-hang to keep the slight rain off of them. We were checked in on by both servers, as well as one of the owners. Our dog was given due attention as well.

Oh man! So amazing! Sitting in the sun, drinking cask beer... I'm looking forward to summer let met tell you. My only worry is that I won't be able to get a spot on this wee patio! I asked the owner if the cask will be a constant thing and she said it was. How exciting!

The beer was Driftwood Cuveé D'Hiver, which I really liked in the bottle. It's got a sourness to it that appeals to me. The malt is all local, and it's done Belgian style although it's pretty crisp and clear unlike a hefeweizen.

My only complaint was the temperature. I would have liked it just a wee bit colder - enough to put a touch of condensation of the glass. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be served warmer, or if it was just because it was so fresh out of the new cask.

Delicious! Everything!

We split the cheese platter special which was $10 including a glass of red wine.  It came with crustini drizzled with oil, vinegar and Vancouver Island sea salt. There were a few slices of meat (I wish there had been more!), a soft cheese (sheep?), olives, roasted hazelnuts and slices of apple.  The wine was a bit smokey on its own but lovely with the food. I also had the spicy sausage on a pretzel bun. It was cooked perfectly, and the sauce on the bun pulled everything together.

My partner-in-food-and-life had the Buckerfields (aka Swan's brewery) Oatmeal Stout which was on tap and lovely and smooth. He also had the chicken salad sandwich which was very fresh and well-seasoned.  The bread was soft, but not wonder bread soft.
